Bored of your look? Time for a change? We know how frustrating it can be when you want to try something new but not sure what to go for. Once you’ve found ‘your haircut’ it’s often hard to take the leap and change again. We often get comfortable with what we know and that’s why it’s so exciting to experiment with a new look. The difficulty lies in deciding which new style to go for and having the confidence it will suit you.
Most men have a diverse range of haircuts to choose from than the typical short back and sides, from top knots to fades, crew cuts to caesar cuts, it’s often difficult to decide what is going to work for your hair type and lifestyle. That’s why we’re here to guide you through the process and help you decide exactly what you want and help you explain to your barber.
Don’t be daunted by a new hairstyle, take the plunge and see how your barber can help.
Making the change
OK so first things first, you need to decide what your new look is going to be. Some people may want to go from long and slicked back to a buzz cut, others may want a more subtle change. Whatever you decide, make sure that it’s something that YOU want – you’re the one that needs to look in the mirror everyday so it may as well be something you like! Inspiration can come from a guy on the street to the weekend footy match, so keep your eyes peeled for a style you like.
A picture tells a thousand words
You know the cut you want and you’ve booked your slot at the barbers, but how are you going to explain it to them? Trying to describe the haircut of a celebrity with no point of reference is pretty difficult, so take some time and look for a few pictures that match the style you’re going for.
There’s no point sitting in the barber chair and rushing to find pictures. Take some time to figure out what you want so you have a couple to show – different angles are also beneficial. Using the hashtag #menstyle on Instagram pulls up 24 million posts to help get you started.

Ask for insider knowledge
The best thing about your barber is that they have cut thousands of haircuts in their time and so they know what works and what doesn’t. They can look at the texture of your hair, ask about your lifestyle and tell you if its the right move for you. Barbers are also great at giving you hints and tips for maintenance and how to style your hair. Don’t be afraid to ask as a good barber is always happy to help.
Maintenance
You’ve chosen a new hairstyle, but have you thought about what it takes to get that look every day? Some men’s hairstyles look effortless but it actually takes time to apply products, blow-dry and style every single day. If you want a lower-maintenance haircut then speak to your barber about what you’ll need. Haircut is not the same as hairstyle, so ask what you’ll need and be prepared for some hair maintenance. Cutters Yard use Aveda Men hair care and styling products for achievable looks with minimal effort. Ask your barber about the products they are using during your visit so you know how to recreate the look at home.
Hair Terminology
