One question that we get asked on a fairly regular basis here at Cutters Yard is, should men dye their hair? And our answer is always the same: absolutely and if you want to, we say go for it.
The days when dying your hair was purely for women are long gone and men of all ages are now embracing the opportunity to switch up their look by changing their hair colour.
If you’re not convinced and still wondering “can men dye their hair?” We’ll run through some great reasons why booking an appointment with a colourist at your barbers should be your next power move!
5 Reasons Why Men Should Dye Their Hair
1. You can experiment with different looks
Does it ever feel like the ladies have so much more choice when it comes to experimenting with different hairstyles and colours? Well we’re here to say: no more! Do men dye their hair? You bet they do and if you’re thinking of taking the plunge, we’re here for it.
Maybe you want to try out a trending hair colour that you’ve seen on other guys. Perhaps you’re inspired by your favourite singer, actor, or sportsman and their bold choice of cut and colour.
If you’re looking for a way to change up your current look, hair dye is the way forward.
2. You want to create the illusion of thicker hair
Whether your hair has always been fine or it’s starting to thin as you get older, it can be a real downer hanging out with your mates who still have thick heads of hair. But don’t despair – your barber is here to help.
There are some stylish haircuts for men with thin hair and combining a great cut with highlights can really help disguise thin or fine locks. Highlights for men also generally look more natural than a full head of colour, adding dimension to your existing shade.
Should men dye their hair? If you want hair that has texture, shine and the illusion of more body, definitely.
3. You want to cover grey hair
Way back when, if a guy wanted to cover up grey hairs, he reached for a box of jet black hair dye. It goes without saying that the end result was laughably obvious and completely unnatural. Now you have so many more options available.
There are ways to prevent grey hair and there are ways to embrace it, but if you’re looking to delay the silver fox look for a little longer, grey blending is the way to go. The technique is a subtle way of stylishly transitioning to grey by disguising the obvious patches of white hair that contrast with your original hair colour.
Can men dye their hair to cover up grey? Yes! And whether you want to cover grey hair completely with a full head of colour or opt for lower maintenance grey blending, put down the tweezers, stop plucking and book an appointment today.
4. You want to have some fun with colour
Can men dye their hair a crazy colour? If you have a boss who’d be cool with it or you work for yourself or at home, why not take advantage and go wild with an unusual hair colour?
Want to turn heads with an ultra bright shade such as fire engine red, aqua blue, sunshine yellow or even grass green? Fancy going for a more subtle pastel hair dye like lilac, baby blue or pink, or mint green? There’s really no limit to what a great colourist can achieve.
Just keep in mind that unless your hair is already bleached, or is naturally very light, your barber will need to lighten your hair for the colour to take.
5. You want to shave a few years off your age
Do men dye their hair to look younger? Many women do, so let’s even out the playing field a bit here. Obviously covering up grey hair will help you turn back the clock a few years, particularly if you’ve gone prematurely grey.
In addition, hair colouring techniques such as highlights, in which lighter tones are woven throughout the hair, can add dimension and depth, revitalising dull locks and lifting your complexion.
As we mentioned earlier, highlights are also great for creating the illusion of a healthier head of hair, something which will also help you look a little younger.
Should Men Dye Their Hair At Home?
It’s probably going to come as no great surprise, but we strongly advise you to visit the professionals. We know you’ve seen the boxes of hair dye lining the shelves of your local pharmacy and while technically speaking, men can dye their hair themselves, we really don’t recommend it.
The honest truth is, you’re never going to achieve an even finish when you use box dye. Ensuring the colour is spread uniformly throughout your hair – especially at the back of your head – can be virtually impossible when you’re bent over the bathroom sink.
Do men dye their hair at home? Yes they do – and they usually end up booking an appointment with us so that we can salvage their patchy, uneven home colour job!
How To Look After Dyed Hair For Men
Congratulations on your new colour – you look extremely dapper! But how do you keep dyed hair looking just as good as it did when you left the barbers?
Colour treated hair needs a little extra TLC, so make sure you’re using the right products. We like Aveda Men’s Pure-formance™ Shampoo and matching conditioner which cleanse, condition and refresh hair while also moisturising it.
We should also point out that, of course while men can dye their hair, dyed hair does need a little more maintenance to keep it looking good and you may need to book more regular appointments with your barber for root touch ups, as well as your regular trims.
