Hair loss is a common cause of anxiety amongst men entering their middle ages, and for some, even younger. Unfortunately, it is difficult to completely prevent male baldness – but there are ways we can help slow it down.
According to the Men’s Health Forum, two-thirds of all men will eventually be affected by male pattern baldness. This means that in the UK, 7.4 million men are losing their hair at any one time.Â
Contrary to many beliefs, there is actual proof that there are racial differences to male pattern baldness. For example, caucasian men have the highest rates of baldness, closely followed by Afro-Caribbeans. Asian men, in particular, have one of the lowest rates of any race.
So how can we actually help slow down the process of patchy hair loss, and even promote hair growth in our bodies? Here are our top tips for how to treat hair loss in men.
Vitamins
Vitamins are not only healthy for overall well being but also good for your hair. Vitamin A encourages the healthy production of sebum in the scalp. Sebum is an oily substance that is naturally produced to protect our skin.
Vitamin E is also well known to improve blood circulation in the scalp to help hair follicles remain productive. So taking vitamins is a good way to slow down the balding process.
Avoid Heat on Hair
Subjecting your hair to too much heat during your daily life can have implications on your hair. We suggest that you avoid the use of hair dryer’s and also advise you to wear hats on very hot days.
High or excessive heat can permanently break the S-S or disulfide bonds within hair strands that give hair its strength along with protein cross-links.
Use an Exfoliating Shampoo
Regular washing with shampoo is part of preventing hair loss by keeping the hair and scalp clean. It helps prevent the risk of infections and dandruff that will lead to hair breakage. The recommended amount of times to wash men’s hair is around 2-3 times at least
Our advice is to use special exfoliating shampoo, just like Aveda’s Nourishing Exfoliating Shampoo which includes wintergreen-derived salicylic acid which helps to strengthen thinning hair and remove buildup that can clog pores in the scalp.
Avoid Smoking or Alcohol
One way to help slow down the process of hair loss is to look at the causes. Smoking and heavy drinking have been linked to increasing the likelihood of balding in males.
So cutting down on the alcohol you consume as well as quitting smoking can help your hair follicles function normally.
Physical Activity
Stress and high blood pressure is a widely known cause of hair loss amongst men, especially if they have demanding lifestyles. In order to prevent hair loss through stress, you need to have it under control.
One of the most popular ways to relieve stress is exercise. Exercise and other physical activity produce endorphins which act as natural painkillers and in turn can lower your blood pressure.
Diet
The food we eat can have a drastic impact on male hair loss. Studies have shown that eating a lot of fast food at a young age can cause a deficiency of essential vitamins such as iron and zinc, which can speed up the hair loss process. Â
This is why having a healthy and balanced diet is important – so your body has all the vitamins it needs to maintain your hair follicles. Some foods such as egg, spinach and fatty fish are known to actually boost hair growth!
