How to Prevent Dandruff for Men: Our Top Tips
1st December 2020
Dandruff causes white, oily flakes to build up in the hair and often gets worse during the colder months of the year. There are several different causes for it including irritated and oily skin, a dry scalp caused by overwashing or using the wrong products.
While there is no miracle cure for dandruff, there are several measures you can take to reduce or prevent it:
Stop over-shampooing your hair
One of the most common causes of dandruff in men is over-shampooing their hair. You may think that you should wash your hair every time you have a shower, however for most people, this is not advised.
Washing your hair too frequently will strip it of its natural oil, sebum, which helps to keep your scalp hydrated. This then causes the skin on the scalp to break down and flake off.
Our top hair washing tips for dandruff are to only shampoo the hair 2-3 times per week to let your scalp breathe and use a special shampoo if you have particularly oily hair.
Make sure you’re using the right shampoo
Another important thing to consider is the type of shampoo you are using on your hair. The synthetic ingredients in some shampoos can irritate your scalp and then lead to dandruff.
So, it’s important to ensure you are using a natural shampoo that will cleanse and exfoliate the scalp, without causing irritation.
We love using Aveda’s Invati Men™ Nourishing Exfoliating Shampoo which removes build-up and excess sebum that can clog pores and helps to renew the scalp with wintergreen-derived salicylic avid.
Strip back your styling products
If you use many different styling products as part of your daily routine, it may be worth cutting these out. While products such as wax, pomade or clay won’t directly cause dandruff, but the build-up of the product can clog pores and lead to irritation.
If you still want to style your hair, we recommend opting for natural products such as Aveda’s Pure-formance™ Grooming Clay and using this sparingly.
Drink more water
Similarly to all the cells in your body, your scalp needs hydration to stay healthy. So, to help prevent your scalp from becoming dry and prone to dandruff, you should ensure you are drinking enough water.
It is recommended that men should drink 3.7 litres of water per day. While this may not instantly get rid of your dandruff, it’s likely to help if you have a particularly dry scalp.
Take a look at your diet
Another cause of dandruff in men can be a poor diet. To keep your scalp healthy, you should make sure you are getting a balance of nutrients in your diet.
Including foods rich in Vitamin B6, zinc and healthy fats can be hugely beneficial. Research has also suggested that cutting back on sugar can help to reduce inflammation and minimise the appearance of flakes.
