Five of the Best Hair Care Tips for Men

13th August 2020

There’s no doubt that hair plays a big part in a man’s overall appearance and can be the difference between looking smart or scruffy. Although, when it comes to men’s hair care, there are many things to consider. As hair experts, we are here to help with our best hair care tips for men.

1.) Don’t shampoo your hair every day

Some men may shampoo their hair every time they take a shower, but this is simply not necessary. Shampoo strips away sebum, the natural oil in your hair which helps to keep it healthy and soft. So, too much shampoo can dry it out and weaken your hair.

As a general rule, we recommend shampooing 2-3 times per week. If you have curly or coarse hair, you may want to limit to once a week to avoid it drying out and getting frizzy. On the days in between, you should still wet your hair and rub your scalp to exfoliate and get rid of dead skin, dirt and excess oil.

2.) Invest in a good shampoo and conditioner

One of the top hair care tips for men is to invest in a quality shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair type. It can be easy to just opt for a cheap shampoo and conditioner at the supermarket but choosing the right products can make all the difference.

You should consider your hair type and any hair concerns such as dandruff. Avoid going for any 2-in-1 products as you will only get the benefits of either the shampoo or the conditioner. As partners of Aveda Men, we offer their extensive range of natural products. If you need any assistance, please speak to one of our barbers.

3.) Dry your hair the right way

After washing and conditioning, the next step for many men will be to vigorously rub their hair with a towel to dry it. This can be very damaging for your hair when wet and can cause breakage and frizziness.

Alternatively, you should shake out the excess water and then carefully pat dry it. Whether you choose to air dry or blow-dry your hair will depend on the style you are going for. If you blow-dry your hair, opt for a lower heat setting to avoid damage.

4.) Get your hair cut regularly

How often you should get your hair cut is down to your hairstyle and length. So, for ultra harsh haircuts and skin fades, you will need to visit the barber more frequently than short to medium length haircuts.

Getting your hair cut isn’t just about maintaining its shape though, it’s also important for keeping your hair tidy and healthy. If you’re unsure how often you should get your hair cut, speak to one of our barbers who will be happy to advise.

5.) Don’t overdo it with products

When washing or styling your hair, it’s a common misconception that you need lots of product. In this case, less is more! Generally, men with short and thin hair will need a lot less product than those with thick, long or curly hair.

For styling products such as hair gel and pomade, it’s best to start with a pea-sized amount and then build up if needed. A top tip is to ensure the product is spread all over your hands so you distribute it evenly and avoid any clumps.
